2010. Fue la noticia del día de ayer pero servidor no se ha enterado hasta esta misma mañana. Nick Curran, uno de nuestros más adorados guerreros del rock'n'roll, finalmente perdió la batalla contra el cáncer. En los últimos meses se habían ido filtrando noticias contradictorias pero todos confiábamos en un desenlace positivo a toda esta historia. Todos, a estas alturas de la película, ya nos hemos hartado de ver "partir" a muchos de nuestros ídolos, y en cierta manera uno se va acostumbrando y tomándolo como lo que es, algo inevitable. La edad no perdona a nadie. Pero, ay amigos, cuando empiezan a caer en combate músicos que son menores que uno... ufff, la sensación es bastante más desagradable. La puta e injusta fugacidad (y arbitrariedad) de la vida. No nos vamos a poner depresivos, seguro que el bueno de Nick querría que bailáramos y bebiésemos a su salud. Eso haremos. Hoy lo recordamos con el que fue su último disco, mucho más que un preciosista ejercicio de estilo, un auténtico tributo a los maestros. Amigo, allá donde estés, descansa en paz.

Comin' on like a sci-fi hybrid of T-Bone Walker, Little Richard, and Guitar Slim, guitarist/singer Nick Curran is a powerhouse performer who owes a strong debt to blues and rockabilly artists of the '50s. Originally from Portland, ME, Curran began performing in his early teens with his father's band, Mike Curran & the Tremors. At 19, while playing with local rockabilly band King Memphis, Curran met rockabilly legend Ronnie Dawson and ended up touring with him for about six months. Soon after coming off the road, he got a call to do a tour with Texas rockabilly queen Kim Lenz and eventually joined her backup band, the Jaguars.

Subsequently, Curran moved to Dallas where he quickly immersed himself in the city's vibrant blues traditions as well as the roots music scene in Austin. It was during this time that Curran toured with retro-country sensation Wayne Hancock. Citing such influences as Wynonie Harris, Otis West, Roy Brown, and many other postwar blues and rock & roll artists, Curran released his solo album debut, Fixin' Your Head, in 2000. Recording live, single takes on vintage equipment, Curran has cultivated an impressive retro '50s jump blues sound that is only enhanced by his predilection for vintage clothes and Nu Nile pomade.Nitelife Boogie followed in 2001 and further solidified Curran's reputation as one of the most authentic and exciting roots musicians of his generation.

In a move that garnered him a slightly higher profile, Curran signed with legit-blues label Blind Pig Records in 2002 and released his third album the following year. Featuring more of Curran's old-school blues and R&B, Doctor Velvet found the still twenty-something artist branching out into Delta blues, reworking the Sonics' garage rock classic "Shot Down," and performing alongside one of his musical idols, original Fabulous Thunderbirds guitarist Jimmie Vaughan. Further accolades followed in 2004 as Curran received the W.C. Handy Award for Best New Artist Debut and released his fourth album, Player!

Toward the latter stages of the tour promoting Player!, Curran parted ways with his longtime Nitelifes rhythm section of ex-Fabulous Thunderbirds bassist Preston Hubbard and drummer Damien Llanes. Ironically, Curran then joined vocalist Kim Wilson's lastest incarnation of The Fabulous Thunderbirds in time to record the band's 2005 release Painted On.

After leaving the T-Birds, Curran formed the punk-blues combo Deguello with T-Birds' bassist Ronnie James Weber and played in various side-projects before relaunching his solo career. In 2010, Curran released Reformed School Girl on Eclecto Groove Records.

Nick Curran was born in Biddeford, Maine, and grew up in nearby Sanford. Curran began his professional career at age nineteen, leaving Maine to tour with Ronnie Dawson, “The Blonde Bomber.” Although Dawson was primarily a rockabilly musician, many blues and punk fans appreciated his performances. He taught Curran not to get pigeonholed. Curran toured next with Texas rockabilly doyenne Kim Lenz, moving to Dallas to join her backup band the Jaguars for two years, and performing on Lenz’s recording, The One And Only. Nick would stay with the Jaguars for two years. He is also featured on Lenz’s latest CD, It’s All True, and toured with her in the summer of 2009.
In 1999 the Texas Jamboree label issued Curran’s debut solo recording, Fixin' Your Head. As he would do on all future CDs, Curran, used vintage recording equipment to achieve the feel and sound of old 45s and 78s, and the LPs of the 1950s. To support the recording he formed the band, Nick Curran & the Nitelifes.
From 2004 to 2007 Curran played with The Fabulous Thunderbirds appearing on their 2005 recording, Painted On. During that time, Curran and bassist Ronnie James started the punk band, Deguello, saying that it “sounded as if Little Richard sang with The Ramones.”
Curran performed four songs in a scene in the 2008 HBO Series, True Blood."
After performing a solo show in November, 2008, Nick formed the rock ‘n’ roll roots band, The Lowlifes. Curran is also in the Austin-based punk/rock ‘n’ roll band The Flash Boys.

As of 2010, Nick Curran was diagnosed with oral cancer. As of June 2010, he was deemed cancer free.

In April 2011, it was announced[who?] that his cancer returned and he was undergoing treatment. He died on October 6, 2012.

John Hiatt - The Open Road

2010. Han pasado dos años y dos discos desde la publicación de este "The Open Road", decimonoveno LP de estudio de John Hiatt, y si bien no creo que sea el mejor de su discografía (ni tampoco el más valorado) lo cierto es que es favorito personal de quien escribe. John Hiatt, para quien no lo conozca, es un currante del rock desde hace casi 40 años, con un estilo propio más que consolidado, así que no esperes encontrar algo novedoso o vanguardista en este disco. John Hiatt hace lo que actualmente se conoce por "americana" desde mucho antes que el término fuera acuñado. John Hiatt es un tipo que debería jugar en la liga de Springsteen, Mellencamp o si me apuras Fogerty, aunque los astros nunca le han deparado la suerte que merece y lleva todo este tiempo, con altibajos, en un discreto segundo plano. John Hiatt es un tipo al que, si aún no has oído, ya tardas en escuchar. Historias de carretera que escucharás una y otra vez. Y hasta aquí hemos llegado. ¡Salud!

Jasmine Kara - Blues Ain't Nothing But A Good Woman Gone Bad

2010. Vamos hoy con un descubrimiento reciente para un servidor, la cantante sueca Jasmine Kara. Como os habréis dado cuenta no es la típica sueca del inconsciente colectivo (rubia, pálida, ojos azules) ya que es hija de madre sueca y padre iraní, lo que le ha hecho heredar una belleza singular y un fantástico tono de piel. Bendita mezcla, siempre lo dije...

Bien, no me voy a enrollar mucho porque os pongo toda la info biográfica que aparece en su web, amén de numerosos vídeos. Sólo comentar que el disco se editó originalmente en 2010 en el sello Tri-Sound, uno de cuyos fundadores (y productor ejecutivo del disco) es el mítico Marshall Chess. Posteriormente, en 2011, fue reeditado por el sello Acid Jazz, que aparte del CD también fabricó una tirada en vinilo. Vale que a veces tiene pinta casi de hip-hopera, pero lo cierto es que esto que nos tenemos entre manos es una enérgica combinación de blues, soul, r&b cantada por una voz brillante y llena de matices, un nuevo valor que esperemos nos dé grandes alegrías en el futuro. Recemos porque no llegue un multinacional y la malee. Pues eso. ¡Salud!

Jasmine Kara was born 1988 in a small Swedish town to an Iranian father and a Swedish mother. Even as a little girl she knew that music was her calling. Jasmine started performing at talent shows and took every chance she could to get up on the stage. Writing, singing and performing was all she wanted to do, music was her muse and life ahead seemed beautiful for the Jasmine.

Then her life took a dramatic turn. In her mid-teens she fell in love for the first time. But this love soon turned out to be everything but an innocent teenage love affair. Jasmine quickly found herself trapped in the most abusive and destructive relationship imaginable. She started sinking deeper and deeper in a spiral of violence and self harm, losing her music and losing herself completely. This very dark period almost cost her her life.

But when she had reached her absolute lowest depth of misery - a miracle happened. Someone handed her a guitar. And as soon as she started strumming it, she remembered how good music used to make her feel. How music is a healer. And she realised that music was the only thing that could save her.

Shortly thereafter Jasmine decided to break up and leave. She left home, she left the town she grew up in, the relationship that almost killed her - her old life altogether, in search for a new. She started travelling the world, determined to find a way to make a living as a performing artist.

When 17 year old Jasmine arrived in New York she immediately knew she had come home. The city’s music scene in general and it’s jazz, blues and R&B clubs in particular made her realise that this was where she belonged. She started performing all over the city and took every chance she could get to sing to anyone who’d listen. Gradually she started noticing how her powerful voice could move her audience, making her even more certain that this was what she needed to do for the rest of her life. However, that dream of a recording contract kept eluding her, despite promises and close calls.

Eventually she was picked up by new independent label Tri-Sound. One of it’s founders was legendary record man Marshall Chess (of Chess Records/Rolling Stones fame), who ended up as Jasmine’s Executive Producer on her debut album ”Blues Ain’t Nothing But A Good Woman Gone Bad”. A collection of classic old school blues and R&B-numbers from the Chess catalogue, but with Jasmine’s remarkable voice, the album was recorded during 48 hours in the well-renowned Cosmos Studio in Stockholm.

Marshall Chess says "I've been around the blues and singers who are in touch with their soul my whole life. Jasmine Kara is the real deal! The blues like a taste of freedom has truly transformed this young singer. Her Iranian roots, her Swedish upbringing and her recent meeting with - and interpretation of - the American blues is an amazing testament to what a universal language music is. And; to how different expressions of a longing for freedom always have had an underlying, common denominator."

Ever since her troubled teens, Jasmine had kept a diary, written notes and letters and a blog to document her dramatic roller coaster journey to where she has arrived today. This material makes for very fascinating and captivating reading. SO much so, that her label decided to turn it into a autobiographic novel to be launched in conjunction with the album release. So far only printed in the Swedish language, the book is called ”Hälsa Henne Att Hon Ska Dö” (”Tell Her That She Is Dead”) and this debut marks the start of yet another creative aspect of the much talented and versatile artist that is Jasmine Kara.

Imperial State Electric - S/T

2010. Ahora que acaban de publicar su esperada continuación (disco en directo mediante) dediquemos un par de líneas a recomendar el debut de los suecos. Formados en 2009 por Nicke Andersson (a.k.a. Nick Royale) ex-guitarrista y cantante de The Hellacopters (y antes batería de Entombed) Imperial State Electric abundan en la radical pero acertada evolución musical de Nicke, continuando donde lo dejaron The Hellacopters, añadiendo sonidos powerpoperos a la paleta sonora impregnada de punk-rock, garage y rock clásico que ya nos ofrecía su anterior banda. Lo que está claro es que el bueno de Nick tiene una increíble facilidad para crear melodías pegadizas y canciones con gancho, no se cansa de demostrarlo. Me quedo con la tentación de hablar del nuevo disco, recién salido del horno, pero bueno, ya tocará cuando saquen el tercero :) 9/10. Salud!

Tift Merritt - See You On The Moon

2010. Último y delicioso disco hasta la fecha de la talentosa Tift Merrit, cantautora estadounidense (Carolina del Norte, 1975) que lleva publicados desde finales de los 90's cuatro discos de estudio y dos directos, amén de otros dos EP's.
En la propuesta de Tift Merritt hay algo íntimo y falto de pretensión que hace su música enormemente atractiva. Una música delicada pero a la vez llena de fuerza y energía. Tift juega en la liga de unas Neko Case o Lucinda Williams por ocupar el podio que aún no han dejado vacío otras como Emmylou Harris.
Maravillosa producción de Tucker Martine que amplía el abanico de sonoridades habitual de Tift, añadiendo a su sobrio estilo arreglos más que interesantes. Sólo por la inicial "Mixtape", una de las más bonitas declaraciones de amor que he escuchado, ya merecería la pena. Si aún no has tenido la suerte de oírla ponle remedio a la voz de ya. ¡Salud!

Saint Jude - Diary of a Soul Fiend

2010. Interesante primer lanzamiento de esta banda británica, publicado a mediados de 2010 y que nos llegó avalado por quizá unas demasiado entusiastas críticas y la producción y bendición del afamado Chris Kimsey. Lo cierto es que su propuesta dista mucho de ser original e instantáneamente la asociamos a los Big Brother & The Holding Company de Janis Joplin, a clásicos modernos como The MotherStation o los más recientes Grace Potter and The Nocturnals si nos guiamos por la voz femenina o a The Black Crowes o Cry of Love si ampliamos la mirada, pero a pesar de lo poco que aporta el disco al género la factura es impecable, si bien como digo es más un ejercicio de estilo que otra cosa. También, no nos vamos a engañar, el hecho de tener una cantante guapetona les ha ayudado a la hora de ganar atención, que ya somos mayorcitos y sabemos de qué va la vaina. Rock clásico con tintes soul que no te va a cambiar la vida pero te hará pasar un rato entretenido. Tampoco pierdes nada por probar... ¡Salud!

V.A. - New Orleans Funk Experience

2010. Temendo este recopilatorio que pillé hace unas semanas, incontestable reunión de lo más granado de la escena funkorra de Nueva Orleans, principalmente de finales de los años 60. Bueno, en honor a la verdad aquí encontramos también soul, rhythm and blues y rock'n'roll, pero siempre pasado por el especial tamiz sonoro que impregna todo lo que sale de NOLA. El CD, como la misma escena musical de la ciudad en esos años, gira en torno a la persona de Allen Toussaint, compositor de muchos de los temas aquí incluídos y productor de otros tantos, además de formar la banda que serviría de apoyo a Lee Dorsey y que acabaría convirtiéndose en una de las mejores secciones rítmicas del género, los míticos The Meters. Por aquí desfilan, entre muchos otros, Eddie Bo, Betty Harris, Eskew Reeder, Huey "Piano" Smith, Zyla Mays, Skip Easterling, Warren Lee... ¡lo mejor de cada casa! Pocas veces te voy a recomendar con tanto énfasis un disco, pero este bien lo merece y es que no tiene el más mínimo desperdicio. ¡Yastastardando!

Vintage Trouble - The Bomb Shelter Sessions

2010. Vintage Trouble es la última banda formada por el cantante y guitarrista Ty Taylor tras su paso por bandas como Dakota Moon, Ghost Hounds y su participación en diversos musicales, aunque hay que aclarar que aquí se limita a labores vocales, dejando de lado las 6 cuerdas.

El tipo nació en 1969, por lo que podemos decir que ya es todo un veterano en mil batallas, de hecho adquirió cierta fama hace unos años al presentarse a un programa de televisión destinado a cubrir la plaza de cantante en INXS (!!!). Sí, amigos, tampoco le vamos a condenar por ello, supongo que si vas llegando a una edad y no eres capaz de pillar "tu tren" te intentas subir al que sea con tal de viajar...

Pero bueno, lo cierto es que el tipo tiene una clase acojonante, canta como dios y es otro nombre más a apuntar al revival soul de los últimos años. Hazte con él antes de que se agoten, me consta que quedan pocas unidades.

El disco fue grabado en directo en el estudio durante 3 días de principios de 2010, los músicos que le acompañan son más que buenos y las composiciones son todas originales de la banda, algo que les da la credibilidad que le suele faltar a quienes abusan de versiones.

Vintage Trouble, based in Los Angeles, is the brainchild of Ty Taylor (vocal) and Nalle Colt (guitar). Combining their love for original soul and rhythm & blues, the two set up a basic home studio in Venice Beach and started crafting the beginnings of Vintage Trouble. Already a friend of both, Rick Barrio Dill (bass) came along and added his shared bass influences and energy into the newly formed project. To make the band complete, Richard Danielson (drums) was recruited not long after to add the authentic and edgy take that was needed on the drums. With these collective energies and inputs in place, a new kind of soul band had been born with unlimited creativity and force.

The power foursome then moved to commune, create and rehearse amongst the famed musical lore of Laurel Canyon. Within two weeks of rehearsals in early 2010, the group quickly began playing local shows and late night speakeasies. Led by timeless vocal tone and presence, small tweed amps, and a mission to move as many people as possible, the band quickly gained a reputation as a high energy and truly mesmerizing live act whose performances feel like down-home revivals with an uptown edge. Sticking to their roots of mid-century original soul music and recording techniques, the band used a lean three-day recording session with full takes and no-frills to turn out 12 new songs a mere two months into the project. With singles like "Gracefully", "Nancy Lee", "Still & Always Will" and "Blues Hand Me Down", the resulting sound brings you back to the days of vinyl records, sweaty juke joints, and the feel and essence of the original soul movement.

JD McPherson - Signs & Signifiers

2010. Con el título de disco del año bajo el brazo y ganando fama y seguidores día a día se nos presenta JD McPherson y su debut para Hi-Style Records. McPherson se dio a conocer como cantante y guitarrista de The Starkweather Boys, con los que grabó un disco en 2007 ("Archer St. Blues"). Acompañado del veterano Jimmy Sutton (también productor del disco) al bajo y Alex Hall a la batería, demás de múltiples colaboraciones, se ha grabado esta maravilla de añejo rhythm and blues y rock & roll con un sonido para el que el término "espectacular" se queda muy pero que muy corto. Si escuchas este disco y no caes inmediatamente rendido a sus pies probablemente sea porque se ha parado la sangre en tus venas y, sin tú saberlo, ya estés muerto. Queda dicho. Os pongo abajo el texto que aparece en la página del sello, en el que tenéis toda la información necesaria para decidiros a su compra. Hay quien está esperando a una posible edición en vinilo pero de momento bienvenido sea este CD que tiene enganchado a todo aquel que lo escucha. ¡Salud!

JD McPHERSON / SIGNS & SIGNIFIERS - featuring Jimmy Sutton and Alex Hall

With a strong singing voice that moves from smooth and sweet, to raw and rockin' on a dime, JD McPherson channels Little Richard, James Brown, Charlie Feathers, to name a few. Hi-Style Records is excited to present the debut release by JD McPherson, Signs & Signifiers! Hi-Style brought JD McPherson up from Oklahoma to the big city of Chicago to record this stellar 12 song, full length album. Produced by Jimmy Sutton (Mighty Blue Kings, Four Charms, Del Moroccos) and engineered by Alex Hall (The Modern Sounds, Del Moroccos), the album also features Sutton on bass and guitar, and Hall on drums and piano. Recorded to an old 1960's Berlant 1/4 inch tape machine, this stellar performance, and brilliant song writing by McPherson, all come together under Jimmy Sutton's impeccable production. This is authentic electrifying rock n' roll/ rhythm & blues with post-structural lyrics and arrangements.

The album also features guest musicians: Scott Ligon, (NRBQ's Terry Adams Rock & Roll Quartet), plays incredibly tasteful piano. Austin's Jonathan Doyle (Nick Curran and the Lowlifes, White Ghost Shivers) and Chicago's Josh Bell (The Del Moroccos) blow killer tenor and baritone saxophones. Susan Voelz (Alejandro Escovedo, Poi Dog Pondering), on violin, and Allison Chesley (Helen Money), on cello, contribute a beautiful string arrangement to the soulful "A Gentle Awakening". Rounding out the album's guests, guitar ace Joel Paterson, (The Modern Sounds) lends some choice guitar work to the Joey Simone classic "Your Love (All That I'm Missing)".

The Dustaphonics - Burlesque Queen

2010. Vamos hoy con una entrada atípica para una banda atípica. Os copio la info de su myspace, que estoy bastante perezoso.

The Dustaphonics (Healer Selecta's Rockin' Band) es la nueva banda de Healer Selecta (a.k.a Yvan Serrano Fontova), Dj, productor, músico y fundador del legendario colectivo londinenese Raison d'Etre, un colectivo que lleva funcionando en Londres mas de 10 años apadrinado por figuras legendarias del r&b, soul y r'n'r como Bo Diddley, Spanky Wilson, Wanda Jackson o la mismisima Tura Satana, que pone letra a una de las canciones de su primer 45rpm para Dirty Water.
Sobre Yvan Serrano (Healer Selecta) se escribe mucho y bien en la escena londinense, quizá la frase que mejor resuma su enorme talento sea la acuñada por el Times: "The man about who re-invented swinging London again" ...y no le falta razón, bien sea con sus proyectos paralelos (Healer's Selecta Sound System) o como Dj, abriendo shows para Wanda Jackson, Louisiana Red , Bo Diddley, Ike Turner, Eartha Kitt, Chuck Berry, Jazz Cafe, Las Vegas Grind, Wild Weekend, etc... con Healer Selecta la fiesta siempre está asegurada.
The Dustaphonics son una apisonadora de R'n'R con pocas fisuras,mezclan Soul, R&B, Surf, Garage... prácticamente sin despeinarse, con solvencia, clase y una actitud demoledora encarnada en la figura de su cantante Ayna, una auténtica real rockin' singer... pura dinamita para los ojos y oídos.
